Body Lift (Belt Lipectomy – Circumferential Tummy Tuck)
When should I think about getting a body lift?
Following significant weight loss, some patients experience excessive hanging skin in their abdomen, inner thighs, arms, breasts, and buttocks and even face. In the abdomen, the hanging skin can lead to rashes and infections between skin folds. The belt lipectomy or circumferential tummy tuck removes this excessive soft tissue from the abdomen and back, while lifting the lateral thighs and buttocks. The result is a smooth contour and more natural appearance. Patients must have attained a stable weight to be candidates for this procedure. Additional procedures to correct sagging skin in the inner thighs, breasts, arms, and face are done separately with at least three months allowed between operations.
Am I a good candidate for a body lift?
During your initial consultation you will meet with a Body Cosmetica Patient Coordinator to discuss your objectives and expectations from the procedure. We will then introduce you to the physician, who will suggest a method that suits you best and answer any questions that you might have. This will involve a complete medical history and an examination of the skin, soft tissue and muscles of the abdomen, thighs, buttocks, and back. They will suggest a body lift procedure that suits you best and answer any questions that you might have.
What are the different techniques available?
The belt lipectomy is performed through horizontal incisions in the lower abdomen and in the lower back just above the buttocks. The rectus abdominis muscles of the abdomen are tightened when indicated, and the excess skin and fat from the abdomen, flanks, and back are trimmed and re-draped. Liposuction is sometimes also used for reduction of the flanks. The umbilicus, or navel, is repositioned as is done in a standard abdominoplasty, or tummy tuck. Small drains are placed beneath both the anterior and posterior skin. The body lift procedure averages six hours in length and is performed in the hospital under general anesthesia. All patients stay in the hospital for 1-3 days after the procedure.
What should I expect after a body lift procedure?
Following the procedure, an abdominal binder is placed, followed by a compressive garment after the drains are removed. The drains are removed 1-2 weeks following the procedure. Most sutures placed will dissolve. Patients generally require two weeks off of work after this type of procedure. Walking is permitted and encouraged the day after the procedure, but strenuous activity and heavy lifting are limited until six weeks following the procedure.
