What is a breast lift?

Following pregnancy or weight loss, the breasts may sag. The mastopexy procedure lifts the breast by repositioning the breast tissue and allowing the skin to re-drape in its new position. This also raises the height of the nipple and areola, which produces a more youthful contour to the breast. Some patients desire more fullness in their breasts, and breast augmentation can be performed simultaneously with the breast lift procedure.

Am I a good candidate for a breast lift?

What are the different techniques available for a breast lift?

There are several techniques used in the mastopexy procedure, and these include approaches through the circumareolar incision (the incision is made around the nipple-areolar complex only), through the vertical incision (the incision is made around the nipple-areolar complex and vertically below it), and through the traditional incision (an incision is made around the nipple-areolar complex, vertically below the breast, and horizontally along the inferior aspect of the breast). The particular technique used is based upon the amount of lift that your breast requires, and whether or not an additional breast augmentation with implants is to be performed. The procedure takes two to three hours to perform and is done in our private ambulatory surgery facility under general anesthesia. Most patients are able to return home following the procedure.

What should I expect after a breast lift procedure?

Following the procedure, the patient is placed into a special soft, supportive bra which is worn for one week. After this time, a regular soft bra or sports bra without an underwire should be worn for five weeks. Mild to moderate swelling is normal and will make the breasts appear larger for 1-2 weeks after the procedure. Most sutures will dissolve on their own. Patients are encouraged to walk the day after the breast lift procedure, but heavy exercise should be avoided for three weeks.
